The Church – What about “home churching”?

What about “home churching”? Is this biblical? And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)Acts 1:15 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.Acts 2:1-2 And they, continuing…

The Church – Structure (Part 4)

How is the church supposed to make decisions? And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.Matthew 16:18 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,Ephesians 1:22 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that…

The Church – The Church as the Family of God

The church of Jesus Christ is much more than a diverse group of people from every conceivable background. They are unified together as a family. While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are…

The Church – Introduction

We now turn our attention to the church. What is the church? Who is a part of the church? What is the purpose of the church? How is a church structured? Throughout our study we will look at each one of these things. We want to begin with a proper definition of “church.” And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail…

Human Government – Conclusion (Part 7)

One of the most persistent questions I have asked myself over the years is why the New Testament is completely silent about government and changing a nation. It is only recently that I have begun to see that that is not the case. If you are looking at changing a nation through legislation, voting, political parties, etc. you will find the Bible deafeningly silent. However, Jesus and the Apostles give us a clear path to changing nations; it is just…

The Holy Spirit

After Jesus’ resurrection He commands His followers to wait for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is an essential part of the New Covenant. For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.…

Jesus’ Resurrection

We know the importance of Jesus’ death on the cross, but the whole of the Christian faith hinges on His resurrection from the dead. In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and…

Making Disciples Who Make Disciples

Jesus commanded His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations and teach them to observe everything that He had commanded. The command is to make disciples We live in a day where we judge the success of churches by baptisms, buildings, bodies, and bucks. Unfortunately this means that Jesus’ command is neglected. Jesus wanted the disciples to be disciple makers. He desired for each believer to mature in their faith until they could make disciples of others. This…

The Church is a Family

As we look at the Church in Acts 2 and following, we see a very tight-knit community. They are marked by: Constant fellowship The Church was constantly together. They were daily in each other’s homes. They were constantly gathering for worship and fellowship. They were a distinct community. Sharing of possessions The Christians freely shared their possessions. This was done without any compulsion. It is clear from Acts 5:4 that this sharing of needs was completely voluntary. They gave to…

Every Believer is to be a Theologian

In Acts 2 we read that there was a dramatic change that took place in each believer. Remember that these were all Jews who knew the Old Testament Law very well. Upon being converted to Christianity they came to realize that they had missed the whole point of the Law, Jesus Christ. This resulted in a continued hunger for the Word of God among the believers. They continued in the Apostle’s doctrine. From this we learn that: Every believer is…

The Cultic Laws

After looking at the Priesthood and Tabernacle, we can see the Gospel clearly presented; but what about the cultic laws? What is a Christian supposed to do with the dietary restrictions of the Old Testament? What about the laws concerning tattoos and facial hair? What about the feasts and the other laws? For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. This…
