“Forsaken by God” – Psalm 22:1-5

Psalm 22 is one of the most remarkable psalms ever written. Although this psalm was written 1000 years before Christ’s death, it describes in detail not only the manner and details of His death, but the exact words He would speak and the exact words His enemies would speak. 500 years before crucifixion was even invented David describes it perfectly. Although written by David this Psalm goes so far beyond anything that David suffered that many modern scholars try to…

“Future Victory for God’s King” – Psalm 21:7-13

Previously we saw the people of God praising God for His answer to their prayers on behalf of King David. David had not just been victorious, but God had done far more than what they had even asked for. They now begin to praise God for the victories that He will bring in the future. Faith in God’s mercy The people had a tremendous faith in future success. This was built not upon themselves; the king trusted God. It was…

The Joy of Victory” – Psalm 21:1-6

Psalm 21 is a song for the king returning from victory in battle. It is divided into two parts. The first part expresses thanksgiving to God for the victory; the second part expresses confidence in future victories. Throughout the whole psalm it is clear that God is the only hope for the king and God alone is to receive the glory and praise. Rejoicing for answered prayer The congregation prayed that God would hear the prayers of their king. They…

God Save the King – Psalm 20:1-9

Psalm 20 is a prayer for the king on the eve of battle. The Hebrew word “of” can also mean “for” or “about.” It is uncertain if David wrote this Psalm or if this Psalm was written as a prayer for David before he went to war. David was a warrior king who was engaged in war almost his entire reign. This was a prayer meant to be sung by the people of God before David led the men off…

“The Personal Response to Revelation” – Psalm 19:12-14

David now concludes by giving a personal response to what God has revealed. The depths of our depravity After looking at how God has revealed Himself in nature and in the Bible, David realizes his own depravity. In frustration he asks who can be aware of all of their own faults and sins. The truth is that in our pride we are blind to our many failures and sins. The more we look at Who God has revealed Himself to…

“Special Revelation” – Psalm 19:7-11

In this second part of David’s Psalm we now look at what is known as “Special Revelation.” General revelation is the general knowledge of God that we can glean from looking at His creation. Special revelation is the direct voice of God revealing to us His thoughts, character, and will. Special revelation is contained in the Word of God alone. Jesus reveals God directly to us, and He is the incarnate Word of God (John 1.) The perfection of God’s…

“General Revelation” – Psalm 19:1-6

In this first section we deal with General Revelation. Romans 1:19-20 is an application of this Psalm. Today we are going to be addressing the question, “How can God condemn people who have never heard the Gospel?” General Revelation Although David uses very poetic language, he also uses very precise language. He shows us that creation teaches us much about God. All of creation shows us God’s glory, power, and nature. This voice of nature transcends all cultural, ethnic, and…

“Christ’s Victory Over Our Sin” – Psalm 18:37-50

As we finish out this Psalm we see David praising God for the strength He gave to defeat his enemies. We will look at it from three different perspectives. Historical David describes in detail how he defeated the Amalekites. He then describes how Saul was defeated and God refused to answer Saul. From there he speaks of how quickly and easily he will defeat the surrounding Gentile nations. A simple reading of 1 and 2 Samuel show how God delivered…

“Sustained Through Trials” – Psalm 18:29-36

David continues reflecting on how God has brought him through his trials. Supernatural strength David declares that by God’s strength he can fight an entire company of soldiers and win. He can jump over the highest wall. David is showing how what has happened to him is impossible. By human standards, he should not be here. It is God that has brought him this far, and God that will sustain him into the future. God’s Way is Perfect David looks…

“Our Perception of God” – Psalm 18:25-28

David now reflects on the actions of God towards men. Our perception Verses 25-26 show that our perception of God shows more about who we are than Who God is. God is just. He does not respect persons. His law is perfect and never changes. Our response to God’s law changes our perspective of God. If we break God’s law we will view God’s law as wrong and God’s justice as cruel. If we see God’s law as good, we…

“David’s Righteousness” – Psalm 18:19-24

David now explains how God rewarded him according to his righteousness. This raises many different theological questions. Instead of addressing each question, it is best just to see what is actually stated in the text. God delighted in David It is clear from this passage and many others that God did not choose David because of David’s righteousness. God chose David because of His grace. He delighted in David because of Who God was, not because of what God found…

“God Comes to Rescue David” – Psalm 18:4-19

David now recounts how God delivered him. The Valley of Death David does not forget where he was when God delivered him. He was close to death; everywhere he looked he only saw death. Where could David have gone? David was so pressed by Saul that he had to go into a cave to hide, a cave which the entire army came to the entrance of and Saul himself entered. Imagine being David as you see rank after rank of…
