The Church – Introduction

We now turn our attention to the church. What is the church? Who is a part of the church? What is the purpose of the church? How is a church structured? Throughout our study we will look at each one of these things. We want to begin with a proper definition of “church.” And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail…

Recognizing Wolves (John 10:1-5)

The man who was born blind has just been rejected by the most holy and religious people of his day. He has also become a follower of Jesus. Jesus now teaches him, the Pharisees, and the disciples about false teachers. Wolves want to be a part of the church Satan can do far more havoc from inside the flock than outside. He comes as an angel of light to infiltrate the church. He sows tares among the wheat. He seeks…

100%

As we look forward to 2016, we must remember that the goal of the Christian life is that God’s glory would cover every square inch of the earth. We accomplish this by teaching every creature to obey everything that God has commanded. Because this goal is so monumental, we must establish a deep, firm foundation that will stand the test of time and enable our church to bring glory to Christ for many generations to come. From Matthew 18, we…

Three God Ordained Systems

As we look at how to apply God’s Word to our lives, the next thing we must understand is that God has established three systems through which He works, the family, the Church, and human government. It is important to remember that in each of these systems He still maintains complete control and has establish clear limits for each one. We must never allow any system to become an entity independent of God’s sovereign control. For unto us a child…

Decision Making in the Church

Most churches make decisions through Robert’s Rules of Order and Business Meetings. However, neither of these things are found in the Word of God. So how should a church make decisions according to God’s Word? Jesus is the Head of the Church The church belongs to Jesus and no one else. There is no flow-chart of authority or ruling majority in the church. It is Jesus’ way or you cease to be a church. This is not your church, your…

The Growth of the Church

After the outpouring of the Holy Spirit the rest of the New Testament is largely about the growth of the Church. Each book is a letter written to a specific individual or group of people explaining some aspect of the Gospel and its relation to our standing before God. Acts Luke writes to Theophilus to tell him about the growth of the church around the world in the first few decades after Christ’s ascension. It is a follow up letter…

Every Believer is to be a Theologian

In Acts 2 we read that there was a dramatic change that took place in each believer. Remember that these were all Jews who knew the Old Testament Law very well. Upon being converted to Christianity they came to realize that they had missed the whole point of the Law, Jesus Christ. This resulted in a continued hunger for the Word of God among the believers. They continued in the Apostle’s doctrine. From this we learn that: Every believer is…

The Lord’s Day Gathering

Paul addresses many problems with the Corinthian church throughout 1 Corinthians. In chapter 14 he addresses their aberration from what was normative in New Testament churches particularly in the area of tongues. Although this passage mainly deals with speaking in tongues, we can find the normative pattern of worship that the early church observed during their Lord’s Day gatherings. The gathering was primarily of believers Paul clearly expected the gathering to be primarily of believers. He did acknowledge that there…

Church Family

This week was Antioch’s homecoming and guest speaker Dr. Randy Williams shared about the family that we are a part of as children of God.

The Church Exists to Worship Jesus

Jesus is of surpassing worth Paul here states that he is willing to give up everything for Christ. He is willing to do this because Christ is of surpassing worth or value. Paul sees that Jesus is of infinite worth and that everything else pales in comparison to Christ. This is the essence of worship. The word “worship” in English means to assign supreme value or worth to an object. Paul has come to see that Jesus is of supreme…

What is the Church?

Over the next few months we are going to be taking a break from John’s Gospel and begin to look at the Church in the book of Acts. Our key concern will be what the early Church was, and how we can conform to what Jesus has established His Church to be. Our first question is, “What is the Church?” The Greek word for church is “ekklesia” Jesus chose a Greek word that had no religious connotations whatsoever. The same…
