What Is It Going to Take? (Amos 4:6-13)

Amos has been speaking out about Israel’s sins. He now shows all that God has done to bring them back to Himself.

Gluttony and famine

The chapter begins with gluttony, but Amos now speaks of the famine that God had brought previously. Whether full or starving, it did not matter; they would not return to the Lord.

Drought and rain

God sent severe drought at times, and yet at other times He brought abundance of rain. It did not matter. They would not repent in drought or rain.

Wealth and poverty

God had given the nation great wealth. He destroyed that wealth by diseasing their crops and sending pests to destroy their cash crops. Once again, in wealth they did not seek Him, and in poverty they did not seek Him.

Prosperity and disaster

Israel experiencing times of great peace and prosperity, and in those times they turned away from God. When God brought disease and war they refused to turn back to God.

God’s hand of Providence

God declares His sovereignty over all things on earth including man. He has done all of these things so that Israel would repent. He has preserved them in all of His judgment. Now their time is up. They will be judged before a holy God and condemned. Through all of their sin God has been merciful, patient, gracious, and just. He has done everything possible to turn them back to Himself. They justly stand condemned.

Application

God has orchestrated everything in our lives so that we would turn to Him (Acts 17:26-27.) He has brought good times and bad to discipline us and turn us to Himself (Romans 2:4, Hebrews 12:6.) What is it going to take for you to finally surrender your life to the Lord? What is it going to take for you to finally deal with your sin? Will you stop putting it off and return to the Lord today? Are you prepared to meet your God?
