Week 1 – The Problem: Powerless Christianity

Week 1 – The Problem: Powerless Christianity

Message: The Problem: Powerless Christianity

Text: 1 Corinthians 4:19-20

Introduction

There is something off in evangelical Christianity. It is not theology or even practice. It is a complete lack of the power of the Holy Spirit.

Power in Scripture

God is a God of power. This is seen in creation, the Exodus, and the prophets. Jesus was a man of power. This was seen in His life, miracles, teachings, death, and resurrection. The early church was marked by power. In a few short years, they turned the world upside down.

Jesus promised us power

Over and over again, Jesus promised His followers that He would give us power. This power was the Holy Spirit. What did He mean by power? It is not the way we think of power in our world today. It is not power to dominate men. The Greek word is “dunamai” from which we get the English word “dynamite.” It is an explosive spiritual power that cannot be hidden or contained.

Doctrine vs. Power

There is perhaps no one who cared more for sound doctrine than the author of Romans, the theological masterpiece of the New Testament. Paul cared deeply about doctrine. However, he informed the Corinthian church that he was not concerned with their doctrine, preaching, or logic. He wanted to see if they had spiritual power. That power is the defining mark of Christianity. Throughout Scripture we see that this power of the Holy Spirit is manifested in numerous ways.

Power for holiness

The Holy Spirit is just that, holy. If He indwells you fully, you will be holy. The power of the Spirit gives us victory over sin and lust. There are many people who are filled with wickedness who claim to be godly. Paul warns us that it is merely appearance; they do not have the power.

Power in prayer

The Scriptures speak of power in prayer. Our prayers should change the world around us. Do you see such a power in your life?

Power in evangelism

God gave us the Spirit so that we would boldly proclaim Christ. The Spirit takes away our timidity and fear. Do you boldly share the Gospel?

Power of conviction

The Spirit of God brings conviction of sin. Do we see people around us falling under conviction? Do we have to resort to guilt trips, emotions, and logic or does the Spirit bring powerful conviction?

Power in weakness

It is not our personality or charisma that God uses. It is the power of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, we believe that we must strengthen our flesh to be more effective for Christ. The Spirit enables us to be powerful even when we are physically weak or suffering.

Application:

Do you see the power of God present in your life?

Do you want the power of God on your life?
