Do You Believe? (John 19:31-37)

Do You Believe? (John 19:31-37)

If Jesus has finished the work of our salvation then all we must do is believe in Him. This is the whole point of John’s Gospel. He wants us to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.

John’s family connections

Jesus and John are first cousins; their mothers are sisters. John also takes Mary into his home and cares for her for the last years of her life. John has had a first row seat to Jesus’ life, and he also would have the first-hand account of Jesus’ mother. If anyone would know the real Jesus, it would be John.

John’s relationship with Jesus

John was the closest friend Jesus had on earth. He was referred to as “the disciple Jesus loved.” This title showed how close he was to Jesus. Of all the disciples, Peter, James, and John were the closest to Him. He disclosed many things to them that He did not disclose to the other disciples. Although Peter was the leader of the disciples even he asked John to find out from Jesus who it was that would betray Christ. If anyone would know the truth about Jesus, it would be John.

John was an eye witness

John was an eye witness to Jesus’ entire ministry. He was a disciple of John the Baptist when Jesus was baptized. Following John the Baptist’s advice that day, John followed Jesus becoming one of His first disciples. He was there for the Transfiguration and all of Jesus’ miracles. John was close to the High Priest’s family, so he was present for Jesus’ trials. He was the only disciple at Jesus’ feet when He died. John would have helped with Jesus’ burial, and He was one of the first witnesses to His resurrection. After Jesus’ resurrection, he was one of the first ones to recognize Jesus. If anyone knew the truth about Jesus’ death and resurrection, it would be John.

What John’s testimony cost him

People will lie for many reasons. They will lie for sex, money, power, and fame. John’s testimony cost him his family business, everything he owned, his reputation, and ultimately his freedom. John’s brother James was killed for his testimony concerning Jesus, yet this did not dissuade John. John was exiled in prison for his testimony concerning Jesus. John maintained that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God, until his death in Roman exile. John had no reason to lie; we should believe his testimony concerning Jesus.

John’s testimony

So what was John’s testimony? In multiple books, John wrote with one main purpose, to convince men that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God. John testified that Jesus was really a man, truly the Divine Son of God, physically died, physically rose again from the dead, and is the one and only Savior of mankind. We must believe in Jesus Christ to be saved.

Application

Do you believe the testimony of John? Do you believe in Jesus?
