Family Worship – Progressing in Family Worship

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.1 Corinthians 2:1-5

The Apostle Paul is a great example for us when it comes to discipleship. He was weak and scared, but he trusted the Holy Spirit. He also sought to impart one thing to his hearers, the simple Gospel message. When it comes to discipleship, that is our goal. If our children can write theology books but do not know Jesus we have failed. Our goal is to simply share the Gospel with our kids. If you are terrified, weak, and know Jesus, you can do a great job of discipling your kids.

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.1 Corinthians 3:1-2

And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee. And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.Genesis 33:12-14

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6

Although we start out with the simple Gospel, our goal is to progress further in the discipleship of our children. We have to remember though that at the beginning they are not even converted. After they are converted they are still babies in the faith. We must slowly progress making sure that we do not overdrive them in our zeal for their spiritual maturity. One thing we must bear in mind is that our children are all unique individuals. They will not learn at the same pace or in the same way. Do not overdrive a child, but make sure that each child is able to grow at their own pace.

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.Proverbs 23:26

We must ensure that our discipleship is far more concerned with the soul of our child than their minds. We can be very prone to filling people’s heads and leaving their hearts empty. Our goal is a transformation of the heart, not a change in behavior or the right answers from their heads. We want them to give their lives to Jesus.
