Foundation 1: Fear God (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

Foundation 1: Fear God (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

There is one God

The foundation of our faith is that there is only one God, the God of Scripture. There are many “gods,” but they are simply the inventions of man blinded by the deception of the devil. There is only one God, the Yahweh of Scripture.

He is to be loved and obeyed

The whole of our faith is that the God of Scripture is to be loved and obeyed. Love and obedience go hand in hand. You cannot love God and break His commandments, and you cannot keep His commandments without a heart filled with love for God. The way we glorify God is by loving Him and keeping His commands.

God is to be feared

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The fear of God is the foundation of our faith. Very few people claim to fear God. This is why our churches, homes, and society are in such disrepair. We have neglected the most foundational element of our faith, the fear of God.

Fearing God and loving God are two sides of the same coin

The Scriptures use many of the same descriptions of the fear of God and the love of God. We are to simultaneously love God and fear Him. These two things are not exclusive. They are actually two sides of the same coin. Because God is good and always punishes evil we love Him; because God is good and always punishes evil we fear Him because we are sinners. The fear of God and the love of God resulting in obedience to God’s commands is taught as the foundation of our faith in both the Old and New Testament.

Application

Do you love, fear, and obey God? Are you teaching your children the fear of the Lord? Do you know the fear of God, guilt from sin, and joy from sins forgiven in Jesus?
