Recognizing Wolves (John 10:1-5)

Recognizing Wolves (John 10:1-5)

The man who was born blind has just been rejected by the most holy and religious people of his day. He has also become a follower of Jesus. Jesus now teaches him, the Pharisees, and the disciples about false teachers.

Wolves want to be a part of the church

Satan can do far more havoc from inside the flock than outside. He comes as an angel of light to infiltrate the church. He sows tares among the wheat. He seeks to even take over the leadership of Christ’s church. Wolves desire to be with the sheep.

Wolves will not follow Christ

Wolves want to be a part of the flock, but they do not want to enter through Jesus Christ. Jesus’ narrow road is too hard for them. They want to be a part of the people of God without true repentance, restitution, reconciliation, and obedience to Christ’s commands. The way of Christ is too hard, so they seek to infiltrate the church through some other way.

Wolves desire to steal

Wolves only want to be part of the people of God for their own selfish reasons. They desire to steal the sheep away in order to use and abuse them. They also desire to steal the glory and praise that belongs to God. They are only concerned with themselves and not God’s glory.

We are to follow Jesus

Jesus does not contrast wolves with sheep but wolves with the Shepherd. We are not to follow men; we are to follow Christ. Jesus is here explaining salvation from a heavenly view. The blind man was called out by name to follow Christ. He was not “kicked out” of the Synagogue; he was called out from the wolves by Jesus Christ. The reason he would not compromise to stay within the Synagogue was that he was a sheep who would only follow Christ’s voice. Salvation is a divine calling where God calls His elect by name to come out from among the wolves of this world and follow the narrow path of Christ. His sheep will not follow wolves. They will only follow Him.

Application

Are you a wolf? Do you desire God’s glory or your own? Ignore the howls of the wolves and continue to follow Christ.
