John has told us in John 20:31 that he has written this Gospel so that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, that He is the Son of God, and that we find life in Him. This passage where Jesus turns water into wine is meant to prove these three points:
Jesus is the Christ
Moses spoke of a prophet that would come after him and in his likeness. It was this prophet that we were to follow. This prophet would be the Anointed One or Christ. Moses turned water into blood. He turned that which was to bring life into that which brought death. Moses also ushered in the Old Covenant or Covenant of Law. The Law which should bring life instead brought death.
Jesus turned water into wine. He turned that which was to bring life into that which brings a joyful and abundant life. Jesus ushers in the New Covenant or Covenant of Grace. In Jesus we find life and grace. In short, the Law came through Moses but Grace came through Jesus (John 1:17).
Jesus is the Son of God
Jesus did not use a staff like Moses for His miracles. Instead He spoke the miracle into being indicating that He was the very God Who spoke the world into existence. He is the God Who brings wine out of the earth to make glad the hearts of men (Psalm 104:14-15). This miracle shows the divine nature of Jesus Christ.
Jesus gives abundant life
Jesus turns water into wine. Water gives life, and this miracle shows us that Jesus gives us something above and beyond life. Jesus has come that we might have “abundant life” (John 10:10). The miracle of turning water into wine is to show us that Jesus Christ does not only give us life, but it shows us that Jesus gives to us an extraordinary life filled with joy and peace. The head of the wedding said that the best wine was reserved for last, and in the Christian life the best is yet to come. Life only gets better with Jesus.
Application
Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God? Are you experiencing His abundant life?
