Foundation 3: Gospel of Grace (Romans 4:4-5)

As condemned sinners we are unable to do anything to escape the wrath of God. How then can we be saved?

What is the Gospel?

The Gospel simply means good news. It is not good works, good deed, good morals, or good ethics. The basis of Christianity is good news. It is not something we must do, instead it is something that has already been done. It is not something we do it is something we believe has already been done.

What is the Covenant of Law?

A covenant is a legal agreement. The Covenant of Law is an agreement that all those who obey God’s Law will have eternal life and all those who disobey God’s Law will have eternal damnation. The problem with this covenant is not God, He is perfect. It is not His Law, it is perfect. The problem is with man, we are hopeless sinners whose righteous deeds are filthy rags.

What is the Covenant of Grace?

God in His love has ushered in a new agreement. In this agreement, God gives eternal life irrespective of man’s obedience or disobedience. God gives eternal life based upon Jesus Christ alone. The only way into this covenant is faith in Jesus Christ’s fulfillment of the Law of God, atoning sacrifice, and resurrection from the dead. Our wickedness or our righteousness are not in the Covenant of Grace. This Covenant is based upon the character of God, not the character of man.

What must I do to be saved?

The terrifying and comforting thing about grace is that our deeds do not matter. To religious people that is terrifying; all of their “good deeds” merit them nothing but God’s wrath. To people who are aware of their depravity, grace is the most incredible thing imaginable. God has chosen to not look upon our sin but upon His Son Jesus Christ. As such, the only way to be saved is to believe in Jesus Christ and the Good News of the Covenant of Grace.

Application

Do you believe the Gospel? Will you repent of your good deeds and your sins and profess Christ openly? Will you share the good news of God’s grace in Jesus Christ with others?
