Salvation by Faith (John 4:43-54)

Salvation by Faith (John 4:43-54)

A nobleman comes to Jesus for the healing of his son who is at the point of death. He begs Jesus to come and heal his son.

Jesus speak of signs, wonders, and unbelief

Jesus’ response seems very calloused if we believe that temporal, physical well-being is the highest good. However, if we believe that the state of the soul is of infinite more importance than the state of the body Jesus’ response makes sense. Jesus is here pointing out that the people are more concerned with seeing physical miracles than the state of their souls. Jesus is not grieved because of the physical suffering of the child; He is grieved because of the lostness of the people. If we are not careful we can become engrossed in the physical to the neglect of the soul. We live in a day and age where we want to walk by sight, not by faith.

The man continues to plead with Jesus for the life of his son

Jesus is concerned with the child; however, He is more concerned with the child’s eternal life than his physical life. He hears the father’s prayer, but He intends to do so much more than just physically heal the child.

Jesus tells the man to go home because his son is alive

Jesus’ response to the father must be taken by faith. The man has no reason to believe that his son will live except the words of Jesus. He is now placed with the question that we must all answer, “Will I believe Jesus?” He takes Jesus at His word and goes home.

The man’s family comes to faith

While on his way home, the man finds out that his son has been healed by the power of Jesus. The man and his whole family come to faith in Christ. This means that not only has his son been given new physical life but his son has now also been given eternal life. This life is found through simple faith in Jesus Christ.

Application

Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sin and rose again from the dead so that you might have a new life? Will you point others to faith or sight? Are you seeking signs and wonders, or do you simply believe Jesus?
