The Family – Marriage (Part 3)

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:28

In the covenant of grace, Jesus bride must be redeemed or purchased. His bride is part of the family of Adam and in order to bring us into His family, we must be redeemed, born again, and purchased. The price that Jesus paid is His own blood.

And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. Exodus 22:16-17

And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. Genesis 24:34-36

Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the Lord hath spoken. And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth. And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. Genesis 24:50-53

And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. Genesis 29:18-20

And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi. Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. Ruth 4:9-10

In Scripture we consistently see a price being paid for a wife. This is not only taught in Exodus, but it is seen in the examples of Isaac, Jacob, and Boaz. How should we view this? Are women just property that can be bought and sold? Is there more to this?

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. Genesis 2:15

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Genesis 2:21-23

Before God brings Adam a wife, He gives him a job to perform. God then declares that only men and women get married, not boys and girls.

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: Ephesians 5:25-29

Like Jesus, a husband is supposed to give up everything for his bride. A man that is unwilling to part with a few dollars in order to get married, does not value his wife.

In Scripture we see several valuable teachings that will apply directly to our marriages and the marriages of our children:

  1. Before a man pursues a woman he must be able to provide for her. Having a job is part of being a man.
  2. Women have value. It is appalling the many men value their vehicles more than their daughters.
  3. Men must make huge sacrifices to be married. Marriage is about death to self.
