Will You Admit You Are Wrong? (John 8:12-20)

Will You Admit You Are Wrong? (John 8:12-20)

The Pharisees confront Jesus for saying that He is the light of the world that gives life. They say that He is not speaking the truth.

They cannot acknowledge the truth

The Pharisees judge according to the flesh. They have to make judgments and twist God’s Law in certain ways to appease their flesh. They do not know Who Jesus is, and even if they did, they could not acknowledge Him to be God’s Son. They cannot because they have unregenerate hearts. To acknowledge Who Jesus is would expose who the Pharisees really are. They cannot acknowledge the truth because the truth exposes them.

Jesus’ judgments are true

Jesus only does what God the Father does, so His judgments are only in accordance with God’s express will, the Word of God (John 5:19-23.) Jesus does not make judgments apart from what God the Father has already judged. God the Father, God the Son, and the Word of God are all in perfect agreement. You cannot be right with God and not follow Jesus or the Word of God.

They do not accept the Son because they have rejected the Father

Jesus is rejected by the Pharisees because they have already rejected God the Father. They do not recognize Jesus because they do not know God. They will not acknowledge the truth of God’s Word because they have rejected the Father.

Application

Our default position must be that we are wrong, and Jesus Christ will teach us what is right. Will you let God’s Law condemn you? Will you run to Jesus Christ to be free from condemnation?
