Come and See (John 1:35-42)

Come and See (John 1:35-42)

Upon hearing John the Baptist’s testimony two disciples follow Jesus

John’s disciples understood that belief in Christ and following Him are one and the same. They knew that they must leave off following earthly pursuits and pursue Christ. To be a Christian is to follow Christ. If you are not following Christ, you are not a true believer.

Jesus invites them to come and see where He was staying

Jesus invites the two disciples to come and learn from Him (Matthew 11:29). He wants them to follow Him and see how He lives. He wants them to observe Him so that they might be like Him. They are to have the testimony that they have been with Jesus (Acts 4:13). The call to come to Christ is a call to become like Him. It is a call to learn about Jesus and be conformed to His image.

Andrew goes and brings his brother to Jesus

Shortly after observing Jesus, Andrew goes and finds his brother Simon. He tells him that they have found the Messiah. He then brings his brother to Jesus. He wants Simon to see what he has seen and learn what he is learning by observing Christ. We are called to bring others to Jesus so that they might be transformed by Him. The call of evangelism is a call to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20).

Jesus gives Simon the name of Peter

Upon meeting Jesus, Simon is changed. He is given a new name because He is a new man. Coming to Christ and learning from Him will change Simon so radically that he is no longer the same man. We must bring people to Christ so that He might make them new people.

Application

To believe in Christ is to follow Him and become like Him. We must study Jesus so that we might be transformed into His image. We must bring others to Jesus so that they might follow Him. Jesus Christ changes those who come to Him into new creatures.
