The Light Rejected (John 1:9-11)

The Light Rejected (John 1:9-11)

Jesus is the True Light

Jesus is the Light of the World. He is the only One Who can dispel darkness. He is the subject of John the Baptist’s testimony and all of Scripture. All creation exists because of Him.

Jesus gives light to every man

All men are born with a conscience that teaches them right from wrong. This internal moral compass has been severely damaged by the Fall, but men still know right from wrong because of their consciences. They know there is a God (Romans 1:18-21).

Jesus came to His creation and was not recognized

Jesus became a man and was born of the virgin Mary. However, men in darkness did not even recognize the Light (John 1:5). Jesus clearly claimed to be God, but sinful men could not even understand His claims (John 8:43-44). Some men even saw Him as a great teacher but did not recognize His deity. Men went so far as to declare Jesus to be the devil (John 8:48).

Jesus came to His own people and they rejected Him

The Creator came to His creation and was rejected. The ones who should have gladly received Him rejected Him and crucified Him.

Application

All sin is a rejection of Jesus. All men have rejected Christ and are in need of forgiveness. Believers should be broken and humbled because of their sin and past rejection of Christ. This should cause us to cling to Christ and not our own righteousness. Believers should tell the world of Jesus’ grace that forgives those who have rejected Him. All men must repent of their rejection of Christ and receive the forgiveness of sins that He offers.
