Every day during the Feast of Tabernacles water was poured out in the Temple. Although we are not certain as to why this took place, it is surmised that the water was poured out as an offering to the Lord at the beginning of the rainy season as a prayer that the Lord would pour out rain on their dry lands.
All men are thirsty
We have been created for God, and as such our souls are thirsty and can only be filled with Him. However, because of our fallen natures we do not seek to fill this longing with God. In essence sin is trying to fill one’s life with something other than God, thus breaking the first and greatest commandment. Sin satisfies for the moment, but ultimately leaves men empty.
Jesus satisfies the soul
Jesus promises to satisfy the deepest longings of the soul. He calls to those who are thirsty that they might come to Him for the filling of their inmost being. He calls men to believe in Him and be satisfied. The way Jesus brings us out of our sin is by so satisfying our souls that they no longer thirst for the things of this life.
The Holy Spirit is the Living Water
When we are born again, the Holy Spirit resides within our hearts. The source of satisfaction, pleasure, and joy is now within us, not outside us. We must no longer look to food, sex, sports, popularity, power, money, etc. for the fulfillment of our souls. The Holy Spirit is with us, and that is all that we need. The Holy Spirit is a constant never ending source of water for the thirsty soul. Jesus is showing the Jews that just as they long for water for their dry land and just as the water that is poured out in the temple dries up, He is a never ending source of water for their dry parched souls.
