Jesus is Lord (John 2:13-25)

Jesus is Lord (John 2:13-25)

Jesus acts with authority

Jesus walks into the temple and begins giving orders. He physically removes animals, tables, money, etc. from the temple. He speaks and acts as One Who has ultimate authority. His command is law; His Word is to be obeyed. He stands in defense of His Father’s house, and no one is able to oppose His will.

The Jews want to see a sign

The Jews were taken back by Jesus’ brazen display of authority. They could not argue with Him or resist Him, so they asked Him for a sign of His authority to rule in the affairs of the temple. His authority was on display, yet they were looking for an excuse to disregard His authority.

Jesus’ resurrection from the dead proves His divine authority

Jesus declares that His ability to lay down His life and raise His dead body by His own will is proof of His authority. Jesus is here declaring to be Ruler over life and death. As such He is Lord over all. “He is risen from the dead, and He is Lord!” As Lord of Life, Jesus is Lord of all. As the Son of God He has the divine right to dictate to all people every aspect of their lives.

Jesus knows men’s hearts

Jesus knows that men are corrupt. He knows that their hearts naturally incline towards sin and evil. Because of this knowledge, Jesus does not believe in men. Instead, Jesus invites men to believe in Him. Jesus is to be the object of our faith. We are to be looking outside of ourselves to Him. As Spurgeon said, “… we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: he tells us that we are nothing, but that ‘Christ is all in all.’ Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument—it is Christ’s blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul.”

Application

Jesus has the right to dictate to us every aspect of our lives. Are we submitting to Him in every area? Are you trusting your depraved, changing heart or are you trusting fully in Jesus alone?
