John the Baptist’s Verdict: Jesus is Divine (John 1:29-34)

John the Baptist’s Verdict: Jesus is Divine (John 1:29-34)

Jesus is the One John the Baptist has been talking about

John has been telling everyone that there is Someone coming Who is greater than him. When Jesus comes, John instantly points people to Jesus and declares Him to be the One that they must follow.

John the Baptist did not know Who the Messiah was going to be

John the Baptist did not know Who the Messiah was. He knew that the Messiah was coming after him, but he did not know His identity.

God told John the Baptist the sign that would show Who the Messiah was

When God commissioned John the Baptist to preach He gave Him the sign that would show Him Who the Messiah was. The One that the Spirit descended upon would be the Messiah. When Jesus was baptized, the Spirit descended like a dove and remained on Him. This was the sign that John the Baptist was looking for and proved that Jesus was the Messiah.

Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit

John’s baptism was only an outward display of repentance; however, it could never change a person’s heart or nature. Jesus’ baptizes with the Holy Spirit, and He alone can change a person’s heart and nature. This baptism is the total washing away of sin and imparting of a new nature by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).

John the Baptist declares that Jesus is the Son of God

John the Baptist’s final declaration concerning Jesus is that He is the Son of God. Jesus is the One we must trust for our eternal salvation.

Application

We must believe that Jesus is the One Savior and be changed by the Holy Spirit.
